Happy autumn! This week officially marks the end of summer and the beginning of sweater weather.
Please make sure to send a jacket with your student. The children always go outside for lunch recess unless it's raining or the wind chill is below zero.
It was wonderful to see you all at Curriculum Night Thursday! Since I missed meeting you all at the "Meet and Greet", it was nice to put names and faces with children. Thank you all for your attendance and support. If you were not able to make it Thursday, I placed all the information on the Curriculum Info tab at the top of the blog. Should you have any further questions, do not hesitate to e-mail or call. Also, if you were not available to sign-up for conferences, don't worry. Toward the middle of October you will be assigned a date and time. We can then adjust your scheduled time if needed.
During the Curriculum Night presentation, I discussed the bi-weekly Current Events homework. Please refer to the Current Event tabs above to inform you of the expectations and schedule. I included the schedule through winter break. After that, we will repeat the order. NOTICE: THE FIRST GROUP OF STUDENTS IS SCHEDULED FOR CURRENT EVENTS THIS WEDNESDAY!
I am including the grammar homework again this week. If you already sent your homework in great! If not, here it is again. Below you will find a list of words. By Sept. 21st, send an e-mail telling me which words are nouns, verbs and adjectives. Remember, a noun is a person, place or thing. A verb is an action word and an adjective describes a noun. Just hit reply to the e-mail I sent your parents, cut and paste the list of words, and type the letter n for noun, v for verb and a for adjective next to the word.

SMA FUNDRAISER - KYRS'A IDEA- ANGIE'S HOPE
My first year teaching at May Watts, I was lucky enough to have Becca Scadden in my class. She is a wonderful girl with a great community spirit. While she was in class, she and her family organized a backpack drive to provide needed supplies for people experiencing hardship at the hands of Hurricane Katrina. Two years later, Kyra Scadden was in my class and she too decided to make a difference. Her friend Angie Lee, a fellow May Watts alum is afflicted with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and she wanted to help find a cure. Below is her story.
Five years ago, at the age of 7, Kyra Scadden started asking questions about her best friend Angie. She wanted to know why Angie was in a wheelchair and what SMA meant. We explained to her about Spinal Muscular Atrophy and the research that was being done. She quickly decided she wanted to help raise money to help find a cure. She started a penny drive and then together with her siblings, Becca & Shane, decided that the money they made at their upcoming garage sale should also go to the cause. They set a goal of raising $200 & got to work. Word of the event spread quickly and everyone wanted to help. Ten days after she came up with the idea Kyra had her first fundraiser and raised $9,400! When a reporter asked her if she would do it again she said "I will raise money until a cure is found".
The last five years have been exciting and inspiring. We have seen breakthroughs in research and exciting news from clinical trials. It has been heart-warming and inspiring to watch the kids in our neighborhood, together with their parents, work towards the common goal of finding a cure for this devastating disease. The money raised from the event each year is donated to "Families of SMA". F.S.M.A. is the organization chosen by Angie's parents because of the extensive research they have funded and the support they provide to SMA families. To date Kyra & her supporters have raised more than $55,000 for the organization!
The girls, now 12, are excited about their upcoming event and would really appreciate your support. The party will include food, soft drinks, a silent auction, raffles, games for the kids, music, live entertainment and more. This isn't just another fundraiser, it's an opportunity for a group of kids to feel like they are doing something to help their friend and a chance to show them what they can accomplish when they come together for a cause.

Please support their efforts by making the Fundraiser by attending the fundraiser at Fox and Hound or making a donation. Unfortunately, I am busy this year, but I have been at every fundraiser since Kyra started them. I will be there in spirit though. I am raffling off "Lunch and a Movie with Mrs. Baumann". The lucky winner and 3 friends get to choose a movie and a nearby restaurant of his/her choice to have lunch! Who will win this fabulous prize!
