Here's what's happening in 3-BA's neck of the woods:
Citizenship- This week we have two citizenship lessons as we kick off our Bully Prevention Program
STOP~WALK~TALK
Reading- This week we are Batty about bats! That's right, the students are going to learn everything they ever wanted to know about bats but were afraid to ask. Bat Basics We will be reading Stellaluna by Janell Cannon and Zipping. Zapping, Zooming Bats by Ann Earle. We will compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction genres as well as do a sequencing activity, Also, we will be going to the computer lab to do some "Bat Research". Finally, we will make some cute little bats to display along with our skeletons. It's really getting creepy around the third grade hallway!
Flex Groups - Our small group reading has started. Students will be practicing our strategy of the week in small guided reading groups to reinforce their growth as readers.
Spelling - This week spelling pattern is gh, kn, ph, and wr. The test is Friday October 22nd and the spelling menu is due Friday too!

Writing- we are finishing up our study of good paragraph writing and the students' final paragraphs will be due on Friday. We will be editing and revising our initial paragraphs to make sure we are doing our personal best.
Math - We Begin unit 3 this week on Linear Measurements and Area. This week we will examine both standard and non-standard units of measures. The students will learn why standard measures are important. They will also using a ruler to measure to the nearest inch, 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, centimeter, and 1/2 centimeter. Using a ruler is a difficult skill for third graders. They can measure whole inches and centimeters, but have a hard time with parts of an inch. A great way to help your student is to draw line segments and have them measure them! On the Everyday Math link there is a game called Measure It! that can be a fun way to practice measuring.
Accelerated Math -Students will continue to review multiplication and division. They should know the following vocabulary: factor, product, multiples, square numbers, dividend, divisor, and quotient. Please make sure your child is practicing his/’her facts every night. This week we will work on using a fact table, patterns in multiplication facts, fact triangles and create arrays.
Science - Monday we will review for the Bones and Muscles test on Tuesday October 19th.
Social Studies-We will introduce our maps and globes unit by exploring why we use maps and globes. We will compare and contrast the specific features of both maps and globes. The students will be expected to learn the 7 continents and 4 oceans. I have included some links to help them practice the location and names of the continents and oceans. Enjoy!
