Here's what's going on in 3-BA this week.
Citizenship: We continue our bully lessons with a lesson in the computer lab about cyberbullying, in addition we will discuss gossip - what exactly gossiping is and how hurtful it can be.
Reading: This week we return to our reading book and read the story Allie's Basketball Dream by Barbara Barber. This is a realistic fiction story about a girl who is struggling to make a basket with her new basketball. She continues to practice and proves that basketball is a game both girls and boys can play. The strategy this week is summarizing. The students will learn that a good summary is when you retell the important parts in your own words. A summary includes what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of a story. It includes only the main points and leaves out minor details. The reading quiz will be on Thursday.

Additionally in reading we will begin discussion on how to write an "Extended Response" about our reading. An extended response requires students to demonstrate understanding of a reading passage by explaining key ideas using textual evidence and their interpretation (opinion) of the evidence. Don't worry, we start very basic and work our way up to writing an independent response for the ISAT test in March. I will start by modeling the process a few times and then we will write a few together. This week we will introduce the idea of an extended response using the familiar tale of The Three Little Pigs .
Writing: This week in writing we will be concentrating on spooky story writing. The students will be given story starters and will work to complete a Halloween story. Hopefully, most student's will have theirs completed by Friday so we can share them.
Spelling: The spelling pattern this week is ch, sh, and tch. The test is Friday Oct. 29th.

Math: This past week the students had fun measuring and finding perimeter. When measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch, remind students to think- what is the line closest to - the lessor inch mark, the half inch mark or the bigger inch mark? Use these three visuals as a guide. We will continue to practice finding perimeters. I told the students a little hint to remember that perimeter is the outside measurement of a shape. The word "rim" is in the word perimeter, and a rim (as in basketball rim) is the outside of something. I hope it helps. This week we will also find the area of a shape. The area is the inside measurement of a shape. A study guide will go home this Thursday and is due on Wednesday November 3rd. The unit 3 test will be Thursday November 4th.
Accelerated Math:Last week we began Unit 3 on reviewing multiplication and division. The accelerated math program requires kids to know their facts (0-12) automatically by this point. A lot of kids were struggling last week with their facts. Please make sure your accelerated math child practices his/her facts every night. This week we will continue to review multiplication and division. We will also learn how to solve number sentences using parenthesis.
Social Studies: The students had a chance to explore globes last week. This week they will explore maps. As we continue our study of maps we will begin learning the 7 continents and 4 oceans. There will be a continent and ocean quiz next week. Practice naming the landforms by using one of the neat continent and ocean games on the blog! We will learn the continent song this week to help us remember them all. Have your child sing it for you!
