Check out the new stuff I added to the blog! Since Halloween is almost upon us, I thought it would be fun to add some Halloween sites the students could visit. There are games, puzzles and holiday thrills- why don't you give them a try. I had some fun putting the bat puzzle together and playing Halloween memory! Also, if you look on the left column, with the help of Mrs. May, I was able to add the spelling menu and the current events outline on to the blog. The forms don't look as nice as the originals, but they do the job and now you have them at your blog tips! I will add more forms as they come up.

We have a short week this week and some bonuses the students will be thrilled to hear about. First of all, there is no spelling test this week, which means there is no spelling menu either. Not only do the students get a break from studying words, they get a homework break as well. I did already post List #6 on Spelling City however, for those students who want to get a head start on next week's list.
Citizenship - we will review the problem solving lessons and try to remember that recess is a break in the day to exercise and have fun with classmates. The students are working on trying to not be so competitive in their pick-up soccer, football and keep away games. We all want everyone to be safe and have fun.
Reading- For the last several weeks we have read stories from our anthology. This week we focus on Christopher Columbus and his voyage. We will read a Reader's Theater Play and learn some new and interesting facts about Chris.
Writing- The students have begun writing paragraphs. We will write some more, revise, edit and work to make our writing better. The students are learning that a good paragraph should include a topic sentence, details with elaboration and an ending sentence. A good paragraph should also be indented, start with a capital letter and end with punctuation!
Math- We will have a short week of math next week with no school on Monday or Wednesday afternoon. We will finish the unit by adding more "parts" to our part, part, total problems. Encourage your students to ask themselves - "What is the question asking? What do I need to find out?" They should be good detectives and look for math vocabulary such as how many are left? (subtract) How many altogether? (add) How many in all? (add). The study guide went home Friday and is due back for review on Thursday. The Unit 2 test is Friday October 15th.
Accelerated Math - We will begin Unit 3 this week. Unit three focuses mainly on multiplication and division. The students will learn different algorithms to multiply and divide. This week we only have three days of math. We will review "What's My Rule?" problems, how to use a multiplication /division table and different patterns when it comes to multiplying and dividing.
Science - We have learned about the bones and joints, now it's time to learn about muscles. Students will learn the purpose of our muscular system and the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles. The students will be bringing their skeleton practice sheet home the end of this week. The test is next week and they will need to know their bones! They can also practice here Label the Bones. It doesn't show the mandible (jaw) or phalanges (fingers and toes) but it will help the students learn most of the bones.
Current Events - The students are off to a great start with Current Events and are excited to see what kind of reporter they will be next. I encourage the students to practice their reports on family members or anyone who will listen. I even told them to practice in the bathroom looking in the mirror! Many of them are still reading right off the paper and forgetting to look up at the audience. They are practicing public speaking, so they need to be loud, slow, clear and read with expression. The more they practice the better the report. Also, parents if you are helping your students write an article that's great. But please make sure they can read the words and understand what they are reading. If the words are too hard, they stumble over them and lose their enthusiasm.
