Is everyone enjoying a relaxing Labor Day weekend? It was great to visit with you on Curriculum Night. My hope is, now you have a better idea of what's happening in 3-BA. This is a great group and I think we will have a super year together. The students will return to class on Wednesday and although it's a short week, it will be a busy one. CBM (Curriculum Based Measurement) testing is this week. CBM's are individual "well-checks" we give students three times a year to help teachers monitor a student's progress. Rest assured, these tests do not affect their grade in any way. To help the students do their personal best, please try and have your child get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. Here's what's happening in 3-BA this week:
Reading -
We will be reading our first story, Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann. This entertaining story is about a police officer and his dog Gloria, who helps him teach safety tips to children at schools. We will use this story to review narrative elements and discuss safety tips we use everyday. The students will learn test-taking strategies when we take a practice test together as a class.
Writing-
As we continue to launch the Writer’s Workshop, the students will review the steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We will learn how to reread and rethink our writing through revision and how to use correct grammar and conventions by editing
Spelling -
As I explained on Curriculum Night. The student's took a pretest on Friday to determine which spelling list they would be on for the week. If they missed 3 or more words they will stay on the base list. However, if a student missed 0-2 words they will be on the alternate list. Here are the words for this week. The spelling pattern for the week is short a and e. The test for list #1 is on Friday September 10th.
Base List - sat, felt, last, send, next, best, went, hand, stand, past, grand, stamp, belt, lend, checked
Alternate List- else, guest, everybody, handwriting, pencil, imaginary, miserable, shallow, grandparents, company, pretty, action, gram, weather, breath
Math-
As we continue through Unit 1, the students will be reviewing telling time, measuring and graphing data. Please help them to remember to do their homework and ask questions if they do not understand something.
Social Studies-
In this short week the students will discuss rural, suburban and urban communities. We will focus on our own suburban community of Naperville.
