Bear Win! Barely :(

Well Hello everybody!

The Bears win a nail biter, but it's a win.  I kissed Mr. Baumann and  my son Dan good-bye as they got in the limo for the airport.  Danny is off to Philly and Mr. Baumann is off to New Jersey.  It's just me and Kloey, so it's time to get some work done.  I added some fun new websites to the blog and will continue to do so as I find new ones.

The most important new addition to the blog is the Spelling City website.  Just click on the link and both spelling lists for the week are there-- just amazing!   The students can practice their words right on the computer.  They can play games and take practice tests---it's so cool!  Make sure to give it a try.  Here's what's happening in 3-BA this week.

Reading- This week the students will read Little Grunt and the Big Egg written by Tomie DePaola. This fantasy story is about Little Grunt finding a huge egg at brunch one day. He brings it home and out hatches a baby dinosaur. The focus strategy of the week will be making predictions. We will also review how to self question as we read this story. Last week, the reading test was practice, done together in class.  This week the test will count --yikes! The test will be Thursday. A typical reading week is vocabulary homework on Monday, listen to the story and introduce strategy of the week on Tuesday, practice strategy on Wednesday and students take book home to read story. Thursdays,  the students read  the story again independently and take an open book test.

Vocabulary- brunch, peaceful, omelet, erupting, lava, escape

Writing- We have set-up our writing notebooks and journals and will learn what writing looks like and sounds like in 3-BA.  The students will start  making a plan for their free writing.  During writing instruction, we will be concentrating on complete sentences.   A complete sentence is a complete thought that includes a subject (noun) and predicate (action).  We have already discussed nouns and verbs and this week, we will add adjectives (describing words).

Spelling - This week's pattern is short i, o, and u. List #2 test is on Friday Sept. 17th.

Base List #2  = slip, fish, pick, rocks, lunch, gift, thing, inch, truck, pond, from, jump, socks, dish, thump

Alternate List #2 = otter, addition, supper, rotten, skin, quick, skilled, stock, knot, gotten, copper, closet, understand, interested, arithmetic.

This week's bonus word is ... Mrs. Baumann

Math - In Mrs. Baumann's math class this week we will continue Unit 1.  The focus will be on equivalent names for numbers.  An example of this is two quarters is one way to show the number 50, or ten tally marks is the same as number ten, or even the written word two is the same as the number symbol 2. We will talk about the language of chance and what is likely or not likely to happen or sure and not sure.  For instance, I am sure I will not have three eyeballs tomorrow morning and I am sure I will still be a girl tomorrow, but I am not sure if it will rain tomorrow. After that we will talk about what finding the difference means (subtracting, the amount between two numbers) and finish the week with calculator routines.  Fridays are quiz days and game days.  This week will will learn to play "Name that Number".  Also, make sure to check out the fabulous math websites I have on the blog.  As I tell the kids daily ---MATH IS FUN!

Accelerated Math-  Accelerated math will have their first math test on Unit 1 this Thursday, September 16th.  The study guide went home Friday.

Social Studies -  This week the students will focus on their own community of Naperville.  They will be making brochures highlighting places to live, places to work and places to have fun in Naperville.   In addition, their brochures will include an advertisement, a coupon and a slogan.  The students should enjoy creating their brochures. There will be a Communities test on Friday September 17th.  The study guide will come home with the students on Monday and does not need to be returned.  This is just a guide to let them know what material will be covered.  We will review the information on Thursday in class.

Citizenship - This week in citizenship, the students will learn how to resolve conflict.  We will brainstorm some ways to problem solve a conflict between classmates.

That's all folks  :)
