The students are beginning to settle into some routines and cool off. The theme of our first ELA unit is Multiple Perspectives. The idea of looking at things from different points of view is an important one if we are to understand different cultures and celebrate their differences. We are beginning to discuss how our perspective can change. In the book
Off to Class by Susan Hughes, the student's are learning that schools are much different throughout the world. What is the ideal school? Students are learning that an ideal school depends on the best way to learn in that area. Schools differ because of local geography, climate, location, resources, social attitudes and financial situations. Who would of thought a school would be on a boat or in a cave or at a train station? As we read through the different school settings, the students are exposed to text features and how captions, headings, diagrams and bold words can help us locate information in a text. Finally, through our discussions of differences, students are learning to understand differences in each other and to accept another student's point of view. This will be great year of growth and we can all learn from each other. What's your point of view?
