Welcome May Flowers!
I don't know about you, but it seems just this weekend, everything started to bloom. I love those few weeks when the trees are flowering and the tulips are blooming. The whole world seems filled with color and love. Here's what's happening this week.
Citizenship- We will begin a two-week review of bullying. This week we will watch a video and ask the students what kind of bullying did they see, how did the characters feel when they were bullied and how did they solve their problems? Next week we will create anti-bullying posters to display throughout the building. The students will be reminded to Stop-Walk and Talk when they feel bullied.
CBM Testing - Monday and Tuesday the students will be benchmarked for the last time this year. Monday they will do some math computations and read passages to assess reading comprehension. Tuesday they will read three different passages to assess reading fluency. Plenty of sleep and a good breakfast will help the students do their personal best.
Accelerated Reader - The deadline for students to take AR tests is Friday May 6th. We will have some time in the computer lab for them to take tests this week. Hurry and finish those books.
Reading - The biography projects are taking longer than I thought, but I think we can finish everything up this week. Since flex groups are cancelled because of CBM testing we will be able to fit in biography presentations and a new story of the week. Most of the students are finished with their cereal boxes, or at least just need to add finishing touches. The students that are not close to completion will have to finish their projects at home. Our new reading story for the week is titled Rocking and Rolling by Philip Steele. This story is about natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. We will revisit the author's purpose for writing and how to ask ourselves questions as we read. There will be a reading test on this story Thrusday May 5th.
Spelling - The pattern is changing y to i. We will have our test on Friday, May 6th. The spelling menu is due then too. We are on list #27

Writing - The students are finishing their expository papers on their favorite place. While they are finishing up the expository papers, we will be moving to how-to writing. This is also a type of expository writing. The students will write down how to do something step by step and then tell the class in an oral presentation how to do it. Our final writing unit of the year will be poetry.
Math - We are finishing up unit 9. The study guides are due on Tuesday, May 3rd and the Unit 9 test is Wednesday, May 4th. Then we will begin unit 10 on measurement and data.
Social Studies - We have finished discussing the Oregon Trail and now we are learning about immigration and the Great Migration. I hope the students are enjoying learning about the past from friends and family. The interview with someone who immigrated is due by the end of the week.
Current Events - The news reports will be given on Friday May 6th.
