Field Trip- The third grade is taking their last field trip of the year. We are going to Drury Lane Theater in Oakbrook to see the musical "Charlotte's Web". The students really enjoyed reading this classic in class and are sure to enjoy the stage production. Permission slips already went home. Please return them by Friday, April 15th. We will be attending the show on Friday, April 29th, again leaving first thing in the morning. I will give further details as we get closer to the date.
Donations- Hopefully this is the last time I have to ask for class supplies. We are completely out of glue sticks and Kleenex. Also, we can always use dry erase markers. The students use them everyday and they just dry up! Thanks you for your continued generosity in re-stocking the supplies.
Book Orders - I will be palcing ghe last book order of the year at the end of April. Our class code for online ordering is GLQ3J. Scholastic is allowing parents to order from both the April and May catalogs so everyone can get their orders before school ends. If your child is a reader or you are trying to get him/her more interested in reading, this is the time to order. Scholastic offers quality books at reasonable prices with no sales tax. I am hoping you will think about ordering because if the class spends over $150, I receive 12 bonus points for each dollar spent as well as a $3 coupon for each online order. That means more books or educational supplies for the classroom- WooHoo! You can access the Scholastic site from the blog. I am also sending order forms home with the students.
2nd Grade Musical - Third grade gets to see the second grade musical on Wednesday. It's not that long ago that they were participating in this event. I'm sure the students will enjoy it.
Art Awareness - Mrs. Malloy will be visiting class on Friday to give an Art Awareness presentation. We look forward to her visit.
Citizenship - This week we will review the "I can problem solve model". The children are instructed to use this language when a conflict occurs.

Reading - This week we will begin our unit on biographies. A biography is a written history of a person's life. The students have already learned how to use an encyclopedia to locate information. Now they will learn how to safely navigate the Internet. Mrs. May will be showing them how to make a safe search and explain some computer terms like link, url and database. Listed on the left side of the blog are biography sites that are safe for kids to explore. These are the sites we will be using in class for the research. Students will be encouraged to find their information from either, books, encyclopedias or websites. Students will be exploring the sites at the beginning of the week and will choose their famous person. It's OK to start browsing the sites at home. Nettrekker is a safe database for kids. They can type in a name of a person they would like to learn about and safe links will pop up. In the past, we primarily used books, which limited the students. Now with technology, the students have access to a wider variety of famous people. From famous people throughout history, to inventors, authors, sports heroes, musicians and scientists, I'm sure there is a person out there that will interest every student. Students will be choosing their person this week and everyone in class will research a different person. This unit will take us through the remainder of April. DON'T FORGET YOUR CEREAL BOX -- PLEASE SEND EXTRAS IF YOU HAVE SOME!
Students will be receiving 3 grades for this unit.
Grade #1- Organizer. Students will be filling out an organizer that outlines the information they need to find out (early life, adult life, major accomplishments, etc.) Week 1
Grade #2 - Cereal box. Students will be graded on the content of their cereal boxes. The cereal box is their research project. Week 2
Grade #3- Presentation. Students will be giving a presentation to the class about their famous person. Students will be expected to have learned important facts about their person and be able to answer questions about their life. Week 3
Spelling - This week's pattern is -ed and -ing endings. We are on list #24. The test is Friday, April 15th and spelling menus are due on Friday too.

Writing - Most students have turned it their stories, however, there are still a few students that have not. Ask your student if they turned their story in. Any story turned in from this point on will be considered late.
In expository writing, are finishing the "I do" (teacher models) and "We do" (shared writing - the teacher and student write together) this week. Next week, students will be doing the "You do" when they write the papers themselves.
Math - This week we will be actually learning the partial -product algorithm. Everything we did last week was in preparation for multi-digit multiplication. The students will be solving multiplication number stories and reviewing fractions. Here are the links again for the partial -product method.

Accelerated Math - We will continue our study of perimeter and area this week. The students will be learning formulas to find the areas of rectangles, polygons and triangles. A study guide will be coming home on Monday, 4/11 and will be due on Thurs. 4/14. The unit 8 test will be on Friday, April 15th.
Science - Last week we learned about the physical characteristics of the moon. This week we will discuss how the moon rotates and revolves and the eight phases of the moon.
