Spring Ahead

"May the Luck of the Irish be with you always"

Hello 3-BA parents and students.  Here is the latest news.

Field Trip - The Field Trip is coming up - Wednesday, March 23rd.  I have most all of the permission slips, but I am still missing a few.  Get them in ASAP.

Book Fair -  The Book Fair is here!  Feel free to shop Monday 3/14 through Saturday 3/19.  The students all made their wish lists and I did too!  Happy shopping.

Fun Fair - The Fun Fair is Saturday,  March 19th.  Everyone should come to win a fabulous prize -- Subway and games at the Riverwalk with the fun- loving Mrs. Baumann :)  I can't wait to see who wins me!

Rainforest Mobile -  I told the students that I had hangers and yarn.  They may bring in vines, leaves, pictures, etc. to make their mobiles creative.  We will start making the mobiles on Tuesday.  This is the first year we are doing the mobiles.  We'll see how it goes.

Citizenship -  We will be beginning a two-week cool tool on how to treat substitute teachers.  I remind the students that substitute teachers are like having guests in your home.  When someone comes to visit (whether you like them or not)  you are polite and courteous.  Students sometimes have a difficult time with change but need to realize that the sub has a job to do and it doing the best he or she can.  After all, they don't know how the classroom is run.  The students have to help and make the guest feel welcome.

3-BA did not make their citizenship goal this week and have been VERY chatty lately. I would like to see the students try a little harder to respect YOE by giving five, raising their hands and not talking during the "cracks" or transitions.  This group just loves to talk!

Reading -  The week we are leaving the reading book and reading a fun story called Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch by Trinka Hakes Noble.  It's about a husband who goes into town in search of excitement while his wife stays home on the ranch.  As the story continues, the farmer ends up not having much fun.  But back at the ranch, the wife  is having the time of her life as all kinds of remarkable things happen. The students love the story and we will be discussing setting and how it affects a story.  The students will be making their own Meanwhile, back at the ... stories.

Spelling - This week's spelling pattern is compound words.  The test is Friday, March 18th.  The spelling menu is due Friday too.

Base List #21 - sometimes, pickup, dishwater, notebook, upstairs, football, sunshine, outdoors, hallway, timeout, doorway, sunset, bookcase, everyone, everything

Alternate List #21 - beforehand, paperwork, fundraiser*, tablecloth, schoolteacher*, nowhere, turnaround* , proofread, marketplace, afterthought, breathtaking, overthrow, earthquake, kickoff, springtime
The blue words are not in the Spelling City data base, but are still words on the test.
Bonus word - rainforest

Grammar -  We are talking about forms the verbs.  Last week we discussed forms of the verb "to be".  This week we will discuss present tense verbs. Here's a link to practice identifying verbs.
Verb Practice

Writing - We have started our unit on expository writing.   The students were told that expository means to explain or give information.  We reviewed the proper parts of a paragraph and now we are moving into writing multi-paragraph papers.  The 4-square graphic organizer was introduced to help students organize their writing.  Don't worry, we will be doing a lot of practice before they have to do one on their own.

Math - We concluded our unit on fractions.  For the next two weeks , we will be reviewing the secure skills for third quarter.  The concepts have gotten more challenging for the students and they could use the extra practice. Look for the students to have home work covering right angles, 2D and 3D shapes, symmetry, decimals, faces, edges and vertices.
Accelerated MathThe students have learned a few different strategies for completing multi-digit division problems.  They have been told that they may use any strategy they like as long as the assignment doesn't tell them to use a specific strategy.  The remainder of Unit 6 focuses on rotations and angles, using a full circle and half circle protractor and coordinate grids.  We will also be continuing to review multi-digit division.  The Unit 6 Study Guide will be going home on Monday, March 21st and will be due on Thursday, March 24th.  The Unit 6 test will be Friday, March 25th.

Science-  Most of the students have completed there research on their rainforest animal .  We will start making the mobiles in class this week.  Next week the students will show their mobiles to the class and tell about their animal.
