I hope you are all ready for a pile of snow. I really think the weather man is going to get it right this time. Make sure you have everything you need, stay warm and wait for it to pass. It was great to see you all at open house. The students really loved stuffing themselves and getting ready for the event, but I think the after event was even better. On Friday morning we had a newspaper snowball fight!! The kids unstuffed their bodies and went crazy! Fun was certainly in the air. And of course, later that day the Ice Cream Party. Book Exchange - Once again May Watts is having a book exchange. Students can bring in gently used books to exchange for a different selection. Bring the books in Monday -Wednesday of this week. The students will be exchanging Thursday and Friday.
Citizenship- We are continuing to review our Stop-Walk-Talk program. The students will be reminded of the difference between bullying and a disagreement.
Reading - This week we are reading the story Leah's Pony by Ellizabeth Fredrich. When dust storms devastate the crops, Leah's family must auction off their farm equipment and live stock to repay a bank loan.
Leah saves the family farm by selling off her pony for $1 to buy back papa's tractor. This inspires the neighbors to bid low and buy back everything for the family. It's an inspirational story of courage, kindness and love. The strategy this week is narrative elements and character traits. A character trait tells about the personality of a character. I will ask the question -Use words to describe Leah and explain why you choose those words. There will be a reading quiz Thursday.

Grammar - This week we will focus on homophones and homographs. These are tricky words with multiple meanings.
Example:
homophones - see/sea ~ Words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings
homograph - read/read (red) ~ same spelling, but different pronunciation
The students will have a quiz on prefixes and suffixes this week.

Writing - The students will be finishing up their creative narratives and we will be focusing on ISAT writing for the next few weeks. The students will be working on extended responses to reading and writing the steps to math word problems. Start watching for these things to return with your child. If possible, go over the work with them to help reinforce good writing and problem -solving.
Math - We are starting unit 7 on multiplication. We will learn about square products, factors and how to read number models using parentheses. Remember: ALWAYS DO PARENTHESES FIRST!!! We will also be reviewing number stories.
Accelerated Math-We will also be beginning Unit 7 this week. In the best interest of the students, we have decided to teach Unit 7 before Unit 6. Unit 7 focuses on fractions. This week we will discuss the basic concepts of fractions. Two big words this week will be numerator and denominator. Please make sure your child knows the differences between the two. Unit 5 math tests will be passed back later this week
Science - We start our new science unit on habitats this week. The students will be learning what a habitat is and where plants and animals live. Next week we will focus on how plants and animals exist together. Following that we will be researching rainforest animals.
