Welcome back everyone! I hope you and your family enjoyed the time off. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving at the Baumann household. Out son Dan is coming home! He landed a new job and will be back in Chicagoland by Christmas. What a perfect gift. Here is the 3-BA scoop for this week:
Field Trip Thursday, December 2nd
We will be going on our first filed trip of the year this Thursday. The students will be going to the Dupage Children's Museum. We will be leaving school at approx. 9:30 and will be returning after our scheduled lunch time. The students will be unable to get hot lunch that day, but will be able to get milk. We will eat a quick snack before we leave and have lunch when we return.

Students should also wear comfortable clothing and shoes to explore the museum. Half of the visit will be spent in the simple machines lab and the other half will be spent exploring the exhibit. The students really enjoy the trip.
Don't forget to bring in gently used coats, gloves and hats, along with canned goods or non-perishables for the PTA. This is a difficult time of year for the needy in our community.

Citizenship - This week we will review how to Respect YOE throughout the building. It's a good reminder after a break and will help the students remember the rules as we approach the excitement of the holiday season.
Reading - We are returning to our reading book this week to read the story Pepita Talks Twice by Ofelia Dumas Latchman. This is a realistic fiction story about a girl named Pepita who stops speaking Spanish because she is tired of being the neighborhood translator. However, when her dog does not respond to the English name she gave him, a terrible accident nearly occurs. We will be working on the strategy of using context clues to discover the meaning of words we do not know. The students will use words and sentences around the unknown word to figure out its meaning. The quiz will be Friday because of the field trip.
Vocabulary - stubborn, grumble, mumbled, exploded, darted, streak, languages
Spelling/ Grammar -There is no spelling test this week. We will be focusing on plural nouns. Next week, will add where to put the apostrophe for both singular and plural possessive nouns. We never got to synonyms, antonyms or homonyms last week, so we will be working on them in the coming weeks.
Synonym - words with similar or same meanings (big/large, tiny/small)
Antonym - words with opposite meanings (hot/cold, day/night)
Homonym - words that sound alike but have different meaning or spelling (blue/blew, by/buy)
Plurals and Possessives
Plural: when there is more than one noun
Rule: add an s or es
-add es when the words end in ch, s, sh, x and z
-words ending with a consonant followed by y, drop the y and add ies
-words ending in f, change the f to a v and add es
-add s for all other endings
Example: dogs - boxes - babies - leaves
Singular Possessive: when one noun owns something
Rule: add an apostrophe and an s ( 's)
Example: John’s hat
Plural Possessive: when more than one noun owns something
Rule: add an s and then the apostrophe ( s’ )
Example: the three boys' game or all of the books' titles
Of course, there are some plural exceptions- change the word:
mouse-mice, goose-geese, tooth-teeth, child-children, man-men, woman-women, person-people
Or the singular and plural are the same:
deer, fish, moose, sheep

Writing- We will finish our letter writing unit this week. Please have your student bring in the address of the person they are sending their friendly letters to. We will address the envelopes and send them in class. If you have a couple of stamps you can donate that would be great. Otherwise, I will provide the stamps. Coming soon.... narrative writing!
Math-We will begin unit 5 this week which focuses on place value. The students will review place value through 10,000 and practice reading, writing, and ordering numbers less than 100,000. Finally, they will be guided in reading and writing numbers through the millions.
Accelerated Math- We started our unit on decimals. The students learned where the tenths, hundredths and thousandths place are in a decimal. Next we will compare and order numbers and then we will begin estimating with decimals and adding and subtracting decimals. Towards the end of the week, we review decimals in money.
Science - The students will continue to learn about the six simple machines (lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge and screw). The students will be responsible for identifying each of the six simple machines and giving examples of each. The Simple Machines test will be Friday, December 10th.

Spelling survey - I put a poll regrading the spelling menu on the blog. I created the spelling menu to give the students some choice in how they practice their spelling words. I have been noticing that most students choose the same activities over and over again. I was wondering how you all feel about the menu?
