FYI~ the third grade teachers are asking students across the grade level to keep their silly bands at home or at the very least in their backpacks. These innocent little bracelets are distracting the students and trading them at lunch recess has caused some bad feelings. Please encourage your student to enjoy them at home.
Citizenship-
Manners, Manners, Manners! "Houston, we have a problem!" Unfortunately we have a persistent problem in 3-BA and it's inappropriate talking. The students know the classroom rule and universal rule of not interrupting when someone is talking, but the students are having difficulty remembering the rule. We have been working on not talking when the teacher is talking and not walking up to the teacher with a question while she is standing in front of the room teaching, but we are still being disruptive. I just wanted to bring this to your attention so maybe you can have a discussion with your child about the problem. Sometimes just talking about things makes a difference. This follows along with our Citizenship Cool Tool this week on How to Problem Solve. I will be using the talking problem as an example of "I-messages" and how to Talk it Out. Hopefully, once it's brought to their attention and we talk it out, we can come up with a solution.
Current Events – We are going to begin Current Events this week. I will explain how the news teams work to the students in class on Monday. I am also attaching a informative handout for parents to help you understand as well. If you are reading the blog, but did not receive an explanation via e-mail, please e-mail me and I will send you a copy. If I can figure out how to attach it to the blog, I will. The Current Events news teams are designed to expose students to public speaking and the news. Students are encouraged to speak loud and clear and have fun. The First Teams will report on Friday,October 1.

Spelling – After talking with the students and doing a little thinking, I decided to try something different for spelling homework. Each Friday, the students will be bringing home a “Spelling Menu” This menu contains entrees, side dishes and desserts. The students will have to complete 1 entree and 2 side dish activities each week. If they want to have some fun, they can do the dessert activities, but they are not required. This way, the students can do their spelling homework any night they choose as long as they turn in the 3 choices on Friday mornings before the test. If you or your students think of additional entrees or sides you like to do to practice spelling, let me know. I may add it to the menu! This week’s pattern is long i and long o. The test will be Friday, October 1st.

Writing- This week in writing we will begin talking about paragraphs. What is a paragraph anyway? It's a group of sentences about one main idea. We will begin learning the difference between the main idea and details. The students will have a quiz on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They need to know a noun is a person, place or thing and verbs are action words. Verbs tell what the noun is doing and adjectives describe nouns. Adjectives can be color words, emotions, convey size, texture, etc. The students will also need to be able to identify the 4 different types of sentences; statement (period) question (question mark) command (period) and exclamation (exclamation mark).
Mrs. Baumann's Math- This week the students will begin Unit 2. This unit covers multi-digit addition and subtraction and number stories. We will begin by working on Fact Families and Fact Extensions. We will continue by learning “What’s My Rule” tables, multi-digit addition and subtraction and number stories using “Part + Part = Total” and “Start- Change = End” Diagrams.
Accelerated Math -This week we will continue our focus on the usage of numbers. Students will be reviewing place value with a calculator. We will also organize and display data on different types of graphs and will then learn how to find the median from that set of data. We will end the week by reviewing different strategies for adding multi-digit numbers.
Science - The students have already learned that our skeleton is the framework for our body and protects our organs. This week we will concentrate on the scientific names for our bones. Did you know that Elvis shakes his Pelvis? The students will also begin learning about joints. Joints are the places where our bones connect to each other.
